Privacy Policy

Overview

Searches is a Chrome extension that highlights multiple search terms simultaneously on any webpage. Your search terms are processed entirely on your device and are never sent to any server.

What we collect

We collect anonymous, aggregated usage analytics to improve the extension. This includes:

  • A randomly generated device identifier (UUID)
  • Extension events: install, update, search bar opened, search bar closed
  • Feature usage flags: number of search terms used, whether case-sensitive or whole-word mode was active, total match count
  • Extension version number

What we do NOT collect

  • Your search terms or highlighted text
  • Page URLs, page content, or browsing history
  • Personal information (name, email, IP address, location)
  • Cookies or cross-site tracking identifiers

Analytics provider

Anonymous usage data is sent to Amplitude, a product analytics platform. Amplitude processes this data under their privacy policy. No personally identifiable information is shared.

Permissions

The extension requests the following permissions, used solely to provide its core functionality:

  • activeTab — to read and highlight text on the currently active tab when you invoke the extension.
  • scripting — to inject the search UI on tabs that were open before the extension was installed.
  • storage — to store the anonymous device identifier locally on your machine.
  • host_permissions — required by Chrome for the scripting injection fallback and to send anonymous analytics events.

Data retention

The anonymous device identifier is stored locally on your device in Chrome's extension storage. Analytics data is retained by Amplitude according to their data retention policies. You can reset your anonymous identifier at any time by reinstalling the extension.

Changes

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted here. Continued use of the extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.

Contact

For questions about this privacy policy, open an issue on the extension's support page or contact the developer directly.
